I recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal by Ellen Gamerman titled: “Yachts and Watches? The Real CEO Flex is Washboard Abs”. This article immediately caught my attention, so I decided to read it. In the article there are photos of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel, Real Estate Mogul Jason Oppenheim, Video gaming executive Strauss Zelnick, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and others, most of whom are showing off their lean, chiseled physiques (except for Elon).
“The era of the buff business leader has arrived (usually after a 5 a.m. workout and a breakfast of water and black coffee to maintain an intermittent fast). Recently, Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos flashed biceps that stretched his T-shirt. Celebrity talent agent Ari Emanuel romped on Elon Musk’s yacht with ripped abs in full view. On Instagram, video gaming executive Strauss Zelnick posed in skin-tight purple spandex, talent executive Scooter Braun tended to his muscles in an ice tub and Telegram chief executive Pavel Durov stood bare chested in an infinity pool next to the caption, “Should I start posting photos here more often?”
The latest power move for middle-aged men: looking like an ad for protein powder. Maybe two years of remote work allowed business leaders to redirect their mogul energy into exercise. Or perhaps their muscle-bound peacock preening reflects a new stage of life—Mr. Bezos, 58 years old, is in a paparazzi-covered romance, and Mr. Emanuel, 61 years old, is newly remarried to a fashion designer. Or it could just be a competitive midlife impulse, a desire to look better than the next guy facing the same old age.
Whatever the reason, the shred has become a 2022 corporate status symbol, taunting some men in midlife the way the push for physical perfection has long dogged women.” You can read the entire article here https://globalcommunityweekly.substack.com/p/yachts-and-watches-the-real-ceo-flex.
It was a very interesting read, but my most important take-a-way from the article (besides the fact they these CEOs are using my favorite weight loss technique, intermittent fasting) is, you don’t have to sacrifice your health to climb the corporate ladder or to become a success. Health and wealth go hand in hand. Back in the day, some men didn’t care what their bodies looked like, as long as they were rich, but those days are gone. These CEOs not only care about their bank accounts, but they also care about their bodies. In the words of Jeffrey Oppenheim, the wealthy real estate mogul from the article, “I don’t really believe in celebrating the Dad Bod or any other lack of fitness. I would almost have to question someone’s drive, intelligence, and ambition if they completely ignore mental and physical health.” He is comparing physical health to intellect, drive and ambition, I love it.
Even Elon Musk, who is the unhealthiest of the bunch, has started Intermittent Fasting and has already lost 20 pounds. These CEOs are in their mid-40s to mid-60s and show no signs of slowing down. They are living their “best lives.” What about you? Are you living your best life, or are you thinking, “I’m too old to exercise,” or “I don’t have the time to exercise.” My answer to that is these CEOs receive the same number of hours in a day as we do, so what’s stopping you from getting your health back on track?
