Staying Healthy During a Pandemic

As the coronavirus pandemic situation continues to spread throughout the country, you might be wondering what steps you can take to keep yourself and your family healthy?

Here are some very important steps

  • Proper handwashing;
  • being physically active;
  • meditating;
  • managing stress; and
  • proper rest

FEAR – (False Evidence Appearing Real)

The first thing I would suggest you do before anything else is to take “FEAR” out of the equation. What is fear but “False Evidence Appearing Real,” and where does this fear come from? Usually, false information spread across the internet or well-intentioned coworkers and even family members.  Believe it or not, most of the fear is thrust upon us by mainstream media, otherwise known as MSM.

Even the LA Times which is a part of the MSM published an article last week cautioning people to quit obsessing about coronavirus news.  Instead, the Times recommended limiting “coronavirus media consumption to 10 minutes a day, not 10 minutes an hour.” That would mean limiting media consumption to just 10 minutes a day, given that even local news is almost nonstop with coronavirus scaremongering.

What does the Bible say about Fear?

There is a Biblical scripture in the book of Job ([3:25]), where he says “for the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me.” There is another scripture in the Bible in the book of Proverbs (23:7) which tells us “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” If you constantly listen to negative news about the coronavirus and visualize sickness and disease, what do you expect to receive?

The Immune System is your first line of defense against the Coronavirus

Now that we removed the fear from our hearts and minds, the next step is to strengthen our immune system. If your immune system is strong and working optimally, your chances of getting sick have decreased exponentially.

Unfortunately, what usually happens during a crisis like 9/11 or more recently, this current pandemic, most people do the opposite of what is right. Instead of buying foods to strengthen our immune system, we go out and buy what’s called “comfort foods”.  These foods are high in saturated fat, and sugar which is sure to weaken the immune system.

Strengthening the Immune System

One of the best ways to stay healthy is to eat a nutritious diet. That’s because our immune system relies on a steady supply of nutrients to do its job. Start by consuming more fruits and vegetables. Here are some suggestions:

Carrots, kale, and apricots for beta carotene

Beta carotene gets converted to Vitamin A, which is essential for a strong immune system. It works by helping antibodies respond to toxins and foreign substances. Good sources of beta carotene include sweet potatoes, carrots, mangoes, apricots, spinach, kale, broccoli, squash, and cantaloupe.

Oranges, strawberries, and broccoli for Vitamin C

Vitamin C increases blood levels of antibodies and helps to differentiate lymphocytes (white blood cells), which helps the body determine what kind of protection is needed.

Some research has suggested that higher levels of vitamin C (at least 200 milligrams) may slightly reduce the duration of cold symptoms.

You can easily consume 200 milligrams of vitamin C from a combination of foods such as oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, strawberries, Brussels sprouts, red and green peppers, etc.

Fatty fish like tuna, mackerel, and salmon, egg yolks and Sunlight for Vitamin D

Vitamin D regulates the production of a protein that selectively kills infectious agents, including bacteria and viruses. Vitamin D also alters the activity and number of white blood cells, known as T 2 killer lymphocytes, which can reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses. One of the best sources of Vitamin D is the sun, so that is why it is extremely important to go outside even in the midst of this pandemic and get some sunlight. Lack of Vitamin D can weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of developing viral infections that cause upper respiratory tract infections.

Did you that sleep apnea, insomnia, and even snoring is caused by a Vitamin D deficiency?  I recently interviewed Dr. Joel Gould, who himself, suffered from sleep apnea.  Through his research, he found out he was Vitamin D deficient.  You can listen to this very explosive interview here.

Beans, nuts, and seafood for Zinc

Zinc may shorten the duration of symptoms of the common cold.

It is a fact that most people who contract the coronavirus will get over it. It will come and go just like the common cold or a mild case of the flu, something that we have all experienced in the past, so why not be proactive to ensure that you and your family will be protected from getting it by strengthening your immune system.

Lastly, I will leave you with the quote from the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who during his inauguration speech in 1933 stated: “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is…fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” And now that’s worth thinking about!
