Why Are Dementia Rates Climbing in America?

I recently came across some eye-opening information, and I knew I had to share it with you. Let’s start with the facts. Dementia is a brain disorder that causes a decline in memory, thinking, and reasoning skills, ultimately interfering with daily life. It’s not a normal part of aging, despite what some might think. And while it can affect almost anyone, it’s more common as we age.

Now, here’s where it gets really concerning. I was watching an interview with Dr. Mark Hyman, an internationally recognized physician and a leader in functional medicine, as he interviewed Dr. Alberto Villoldo, a medical anthropologist and shamanic healer. Dr. Villoldo pointed out a shocking disparity: He said in the Amazon, about 1 in 100 adults experience dementia. But here in America, it’s closer to 1 in 5, and that number is disproportionately higher in women. Did you hear that? 1 in 5! And it’s disproportionately higher in women. This is a red flag.

So, what’s going on? Why is this happening? Well, it turns out, a big part of the answer lies in our gut health. Yes, as it turns out, our gut plays a major role when it comes to Alzheimer’s, dementia and parkinson’s, three very debilitating diseases.

Dr. Villoldo and Dr. Hyman discussed the crucial connection between our gut and our brain. We have about 39 trillion bacteria in our guts, and these bacteria play a massive role in our overall health, including our brain health.

Think about this: our bodies are constantly regenerating. We grow new brain cells every 20 days, a new body every 7 years, new skin cells every 7 days, and the lining of our gut every 3 days.

Every neuron, through protein synthesis, regenerates itself. This is amazing. We have the power to change our health in a matter of days or weeks.

Which means to me, we have an opportunity to reverse almost all diseases, by working on improving our gut health.

This is why I am so excited about my six weeks to fitness programs, you have the power to improve your health in six weeks or less. It’s scientifically proven to work.

What can we do today to improve our gut health? Increase our daily fiber intake. Did you know that 95% of Americans are fiber deficient.

This is crucial for gut health. We’re talking fruits like apples, berries, and oranges; vegetables like broccoli and spinach; whole grains like oats and quinoa; nuts and seeds like almonds and chia; and legumes like beans and lentils.

Why is fiber so important? It:

  • Improves gut health by feeding the good bacteria
  • Promotes regular bowel movements.
  • Reduces cholesterol levels.
  • Controls blood sugar levels.
  • Supports weight management.

The key here is to eat more plant based foods, if you want to heal your gut and lessen the chance of getting Dementia.

Again, ask yourself why in the last 10 to 20 years have diseases such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases increased. What else has increased the past 10 to 20 years?

Obesity
Diabetes
Heart Disease
Kidney disease

Most, if not all of these diseases are preventable. It was Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine who said, “all diseases begins in the gut”. He also said “Let food be your medicine and medicine your food.”

If you want to reduce your chances of getting Dementia as you age, I would start putting this plan into action immediately:

  • Consider switching to a diet that is mostly plant-based
  • Consider cooking your own food
  • Did you know that 75% of the foods in the supermarkets are processed?
  • Start an exercise program. If you do nothing but walk, then walk for at least 30 minutes per day
  • Consider Intermittent Fasting. I go into details in my book.
  • Eat until you’re satisfied, not full.
  • Prioritize good sleep, as this is when your body and brain regenerate.
  • Supplement with Vitamin D

Host: Now, let’s talk about what harms our gut:

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Lack of exercise
  • Environmental toxins
  • Overeating

The gut-brain connection is real. We all have what’s called “The Vagus nerve”, and that neve connects our gut to our brain. So, our brains are in communication with our gut all the time.

The human brain despite being 2% of your body weight, consumes 20% of your daily intake of calories. This is why we must feed our guts real food, because our brains are depending on us to do the right thing.

There are are currently 720,000 centenarians on our lovely planet, that is 720,000 people age 100 or more. If we are aspiring to live that long, shouldn’t we work on having a strong mind and body as we age?

Remember, your gut health is your brain health. Take care of it, and you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier life.
