Has Your Belly Become Your God?

Are you thinking about food in the morning, at noon, and at night? I’m not talking about positive thoughts such as the thoughts you have when you’re looking forward to a delicious dinner at home, a new snack you’re excited to try out, or a fun upcoming dinner with friends. I’m talking about intrusive thoughts. The thoughts you don’t particularly want to have, that insist on being there anyway, and the thoughts that feel controlling, nonstop, and make you feel like you’re obsessing about food.

One of the tell-tail signs that a relationship with food is imbalanced is when it becomes all-consuming and addictive. Where all of your actions and choices may start to be influenced by your thoughts about food, or where you feel as though food is the epicenter of your life, or where food has too much control over your daily actions.

The next question that comes to mind is, what types of food are you obsessing over? Is it real food or highly processed foods, the kind you find in Wendy’s, Mcdonald’s or Burger King? We must really take a look at our relationship with food and ask ourselves if our belly has become our God. If so, it’s time to take our power back and let our belly know whose boss!

It has been estimated that 42% of adults in America are obese, that’s almost one out of every two people, but do you know what’s even more alarming than the obesity rates? The number of adults being diagnosed with Dementia, Type 2 Diabetes, Strokes, Cancers and Heart Disease.

It was Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, who said that “all diseases begin in the gut.” He made this claim over 2500 years ago and it still holds true today. Haven’t you wondered why so many people that you and I know, are having strokes today, diagnosed with dementia, alzheimer’s, cancer and diabetes? It all has to do with the food we are putting in our mouths that end up in our stomach.

Food can either help you or harm you. It was also Hippocrates who said, “let food be your medicine and medicine your food.” When you consider that most of the food we are consuming consists of excess salt, unhealthy fats, refined grains, and added sugars, which add no nutritional value whatsoever, it is no surprise that the waistline of most Americans has gotten larger.

Not only are we eating too much food throughout the day, we’re also eating too often throughout the day. There were two myths I was told growing up, that I believed until recently. Myth number one, “if you want to lose weight, you have to eat 5 or 6 meals a day. This will speed up your metabolism.” As a personal trainer and former bodybuilder, I not only lived this myth, but I repeated it to my clients and to whoever would listen. There is no scientific research anywhere to show that eating 5 or 6 meals a day is good for you or that it will help you to lose weight. Eating 5 or 6 meals a day can have the opposite effect, instead of losing weight you will gain weight, and most of the weight gain will be fat, and do you know where that fat will accumulate? In your belly, setting you up for obesity and other chronic diseases. There are three industries that I can think of that will benefit substantially from you consuming 5, 6, or more meals during the day, and they are, (i) food companies; (ii) pharmaceutical companies; and (iii) hospitals.

Myth number 2, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” This sounds right, doesn’t it? If you want to jumpstart your day and speed up your metabolism, just make sure you eat breakfast. It wasn’t until I interviewed the founder of PhD Weight Loss, Dr. Ashley Lucas on my Six Weeks to Fitness podcast, who shared with me, when and by whom this myth was started. It was started by John Kellogg of the Kellogg cereal company, who was looking for a way to promote his cereal. I researched this information for myself because I could not believe that we, as a society, fell for this marketing trick many years ago, and to this day, it is often repeated by fitness trainers, doctors and many other well-intentioned health practitioners.

I now realize there is more scientific facts behind the benefits of not eating breakfast if you’re looking to lose weight and in most cases, reverse chronic disease. This is why I am such a believer in fasting, something I first learned as a young man when my mother used to take me to church. During that time, I thought fasting was just for religious people who wanted to get closer to God, now I realize it has even more benefits.

I am pulling back the curtain from these myths because we are losing loved ones too soon because of the lack of knowledge and understanding of what’s going on inside our bodies because of the food choices we are making.
