QUOTE OF THE WEEK – Jack Lalanne

“EXERCISE IS THE KING, NUTRITION IS THE QUEEN. PUT THEM TOGETHER AND YOU GOT A KINGDOM”

What did Jack LaLanne mean when he made this comment decades ago and, are these words true today? If you ever heard me speak in public or online, then you probably heard me repeat this quote over and over again.  Jack Lalanne was one of the first celebrity fitness gurus from the 1960s and 70s, well before Arnold Schwarzenegger became a household name. An advocate of proving that anything is possible, Jack LaLanne often accomplished feats of super human strength through his life even into his 80’s. He showed the world that you can achieve anything in incredible ways such as swimming from Alcatraz to shore while having his hands cuffed and feet shackled.

Jack LaLanne was a pioneer of incorporating nutrition into fitness and informing the general public of how eating a proper diet could change your life. He knew people needed proper nutrition to be healthy. I think Jack Lalanne practiced what he preached, he lived well into his 90s before passing away at 96.

But what did he mean, exercise is the king, well let’s look at the benefits of exercise. When you exercise, you build strength, and strong bones, you boost your energy levels, and exercise helps towards weight loss, better sleep and increases blood flow; therefore exercise is the king, but does exercise alone enable you to lose weight, flatten your stomach, reduce chronic disease, the answer to those questions is a resounding No, that is where nutrition comes in.  You see, you can’t outrun your folk, no amount of exercise is going to save you from a poor diet. In order to be truly healthy, lose weight and flatten your stomach, you must combine exercise and nutrition together. Jack LaLanne was right!
